JOHNSON VALLEY OHV AREA The Johnson Valley OHV Area is located in southern California about 50 miles north of Palm Springs. This BLM-managed OHV area is HUGE. It encompasses 140,000 acres of rocky mountains and arroyos, dry lakebeds, and greasewood covered gravel plains. As the name implies, the Johnson Valley OHV Area is open to all forms of motorized recreation. As four-wheelers, we are sometimes surprised that this mecca for Jeeps, Toyotas, and Fords is a destination for all manner of dune buggies, motorcycles, and ATV's of every description.
The elevation of Means Dry Lake is about 2500 feet above sea level so the temperature can get blistering hot (110o F plus) in the summertime and it stays relatively nice in the winter. It is exceedingly dry desert so the nighttime temperatures are always significantly cooler than the daytime highs. People use the OHV Area year around but the best times are early spring and late fall. |
